Timeline
* Early 1900s - increased investigation into psychology
* Post-WW I - doctors accepted concept of shell-shock / post-traumatic stress
* By 1920s - '30s - filmmakers were interested in WHY people did the things they did (ex. M at least attempts to suggest the child murderer has a mental disorder; All Quiet on the Western Front examines causes and impact of PTS)
* By 1950s - theatrical productions and film were both presenting darker, more introspective works that suggested reasons that people behaved a certain way; many of these works proposed that society, politics, and family had a great deal to do with this
* 1970s - '80s - films focused on regular people and how they dealt with difficult situations (ex. Kramer v Kramer, Ordinary People)
* Drama films often provide a doorway for greater discussion about deeper issues in society that are otherwise not dealt with (ex. sexuality, abuse, diseases, bullying, racism, etc)
